Continuing the formalization of the later 1980s, the work from the 1990s loosen the grid which operates here more as divisions and floating blocks. The gestures become less calligraphic and more about moving within a particular space or area (as in Areas 1 and 2, Studio 1). Smaller paintings also explore and experiment with formal but expressive combinations (studio installation – small paintings 1993) which were to inform later works. Many works at this time were involved with ideas around doubling and mirroring.
